Basic Poker

A good strategic approach to playing Texas Hold `Em poker begins when players are dealt their 2 face-down "hole" cards at the start of a hand.
It is vital that a player remembers that these 2 cards are the only thing that sets them apart from their opponents, providing an opportunity to win the hand.

Also crucial is the fact that the face-up community cards are shared amongst all the players.

A player must remain focused on the significance of these cards to opponents` hands, especially with regard to the chance of completing a flush or straight.

The more players in a game, the more likely it is that another player has a strong starting hand. Additionally, with a large number of players, caution is advised as the chances of one player`s hand "hitting" the flop are greatly increased. In general, the greater the competition, the stiffer the competition.

A player`s number of remaining chips will affect the hands they choose to play, as a "short-stacked" player, with few chips needs to play cautiously, choosing one hand upon which to bet and attempting to involve as many players as possible in the betting. Conversely, a player with plenty of chips can take the increased risk of playing more hands.

An aggressive player may choose to raise prior to the flop, attempting to increase the pot size, especially from a late position, where such a raise has the greatest influence. Such a player risks losing several hands, but the potential of collecting a larger pot is compensatory.

More passive players tend to be more selective, but pre-flop betting strategy is very much dependent on individual style and a player`s perception of others in the game.

When the first 3 community cards ("the flop") are dealt, many beginners, having already bet, mistakenly stay in a hand. With 5+ players in a hand after the flop, the winning hand is seldom less than 2 pairs. Any player that does not hold top (highest value) pair following the flop, or good prospects of completing a flush or straight, should probably fold.

However, as player numbers reduce, so does the chance of one of the remaining opponents holding a strong hand, so a more aggressive approach may pay dividends. For the player with the action following the flop, a check is a good strategy. If holding a relatively weak hand, this allows the possibility of seeing a further card without committing further chips to the pot. This apparently cautious approach may also persuade opponents that a hand is weaker than is actually the case.

The Turn and River cards provide further opportunities to minimise losses or increase winnings. Once the Turn card is dealt, it is inadvisable to remain in a hand, looking to complete a flush or straight on the River card, unless this can be done by checking. This can frustrating when the flush or straight would have been drawn, but is a more reliable long-term strategy than betting and failing to complete the hand.
